Tattoo Cover-Ups & Rework: Can Your Old Tattoo Be Saved?

An ex’s name. A tribal band from 2005. A tattoo that blurred, faded or just never turned out the way you hoped. Tattoo regret is incredibly common — and in most cases, it’s fixable. At Candy Ink in Sunnyridge, East London, cover-ups and reworks are some of our favourite projects, because we get to turn something you hide into something you’re proud to show off. Here’s how it works.

Cover-up vs rework: what’s the difference?

A cover-up is a brand new design tattooed over the old one, built so the old tattoo disappears into it. A rework keeps the existing tattoo and improves it — sharpening blown-out lines, adding shading and depth, refreshing faded colour, fixing proportions, or extending it into something bigger and better.

If you still like the idea of your tattoo but not how it looks, a rework is often the better option. If you never want to see it again, a cover-up is the way to go. Not sure? We’ll look at it with you and give you an honest recommendation.

How a cover-up actually works

Tattoo ink doesn’t erase other ink — new ink sits in the same layer of skin and mixes with what’s already there. A good cover-up works by design, not by force:

  • Darker over lighter. The new design places its darkest areas over the old tattoo’s lines and solid fills.
  • Texture and busy detail. Leaves, feathers, petals, fur, scales, smoke and patterns break up old shapes so the eye can’t pick them out.
  • Clever placement. The old tattoo is positioned inside elements that naturally need dark shading — the centre of a rose, a shadowed area, a dark background.
  • Going bigger. A cover-up is almost always larger than the original, usually by a good margin, so there’s room to hide it properly.

Can my tattoo be covered?

Most tattoos can be covered or improved. What makes it easier or harder:

  • Easier: faded, older, thin-line or lighter tattoos; small text and names; light colour work.
  • Harder: very dark, solid black fills; thick tribal; heavily saturated colour; scarring or raised skin; tattoos in tight spots with no room to grow.

Even the tricky ones usually have a solution — it might mean a larger or darker design, or a couple of sessions of laser fading first.

Styles that hide old ink best

  • Blackwork — solid black and bold patterns are the strongest cover-up tool there is.
  • Neo-traditional — bold lines plus rich, dark colour and loads of detail.
  • Dense florals — layered petals and leaves are perfect for hiding shapes.
  • Animals & nature — fur, feathers, scales and dark eyes create great hiding spots.
  • Dark black & grey realism — deep shadows and moody backgrounds.
  • Dark colour palettes — deep reds, purples, blues and greens cover far better than pastels.

Lighter styles like fine-line, minimalist and soft watercolour generally can’t hide an existing tattoo on their own. Read more about each style in our tattoo styles guide.

Do I need laser removal first?

Not usually — but sometimes it opens up more options. A few sessions of laser fading (not full removal) can lighten a very dark tattoo enough that we can cover it with a lighter or smaller design than would otherwise be possible. If we think fading would genuinely give you a better result, we’ll tell you honestly at your consultation.

The cover-up process at Candy Ink

  1. Send us a photo. Use our quote form — choose Cover-Up / Rework and upload a clear, well-lit photo of the tattoo you want to cover, straight on, with something for scale.
  2. Consultation. We look at the tattoo in person, talk about what you’d love instead, and discuss size and style.
  3. Custom design. We draw the new design specifically over your old tattoo. Cover-ups are always custom — a design off the wall rarely lines up with what needs hiding.
  4. Tattoo day. Some cover-ups are done in one sitting; larger or darker ones are built over multiple sessions.
  5. Heal & touch up. Once healed, we check that everything is fully hidden and touch up if needed.

What to bring to your consultation

  • Clear photos of the old tattoo (and the tattoo itself, of course!)
  • Ideas or reference images for what you’d like instead
  • An open mind about size — bigger usually means a better cover
  • Your ID (you must be 18+, or bring a parent or legal guardian)

Frequently asked questions

Will the old tattoo show through?

A well-planned cover-up is designed so it doesn’t. In some lights you may notice a faint texture difference up close, but to everyone else it simply looks like a new tattoo.

Can I choose any design for my cover-up?

We start with what you love and adapt it to work as a cover. Sometimes that means adjusting size, colour or adding elements — we’ll always explain why.

Can you fix a tattoo another artist did?

Yes. Reworking and covering other artists’ tattoos is a big part of cover-up work, and there’s no judgement — we just want you to love your skin.

How much does a cover-up cost?

It depends on the size and darkness of the old tattoo and the new design. Send a photo through our free quote form and we’ll give you a price.

Do you take walk-ins for cover-ups?

We work by appointment only. Cover-ups especially need design time, so book ahead through our booking form or WhatsApp 084 263 2974.
