Excited, a little nervous, and not quite sure what happens when you walk in? That’s exactly how most people feel before their first tattoo. We tattoo first-timers all the time at Candy Ink in Sunnyridge, East London, so here’s everything you need to know — from choosing a design to walking out with fresh ink.
Choosing your first design
- Start with meaning or love. The best first tattoos either mean something to you or are something you simply love looking at. Both are valid.
- Collect references. Save tattoos you keep coming back to. They don’t have to be exactly what you want — they help us understand your taste.
- Think about style. Fine-line, script, minimalist and small florals are popular firsts, but there’s no rule. Browse our tattoo styles guide to find what you like.
- Don’t rush. If you’ve loved the same idea for months, that’s a great sign.
- Double-check spelling on names, dates and quotes — then check again.
Choosing a placement
Ask yourself: do you want to see it every day, or keep it more private? Will it need to be covered for work? Popular first-tattoo placements are the forearm, wrist, upper arm, shoulder, ankle, behind the ear and collarbone. Fleshier areas with less bone tend to be more comfortable.
Also think about size. Tiny, detailed designs can blur over time, so we may suggest going slightly bigger so your tattoo stays crisp. It’s one of the most important decisions — and one we’ll help you with.

How to prepare
- Sleep well the night before.
- Eat a proper meal an hour or two before your appointment — it really helps.
- Drink water and stay hydrated in the days before.
- Skip alcohol the night before and on the day. It thins the blood and makes tattooing harder.
- Moisturise the area in the days leading up, and don’t get sunburnt there.
- Wear comfy clothes that give easy access to the placement.
- Bring ID. You must be 18+, or come with a parent or legal guardian.
- Bring snacks, a drink and headphones for longer sessions.
- Feeling unwell? Let us know and reschedule — your body heals better when you’re healthy.
What happens on the day
- Final check of the design. We go through it together and make any last tweaks.
- Prep. The area is cleaned and shaved if needed.
- Stencil. The design goes on as a stencil. Look at it in the mirror — move around, take your time. We only start when you’re 100% happy with the placement.
- Tattooing. We start with the outline, then shading and colour. You can ask for a break any time.
- Wrap & aftercare. Your tattoo gets cleaned and wrapped, and we explain exactly how to look after it.
Does it hurt?
Honestly? A bit — but probably less than you think. Most people describe it as a scratchy, stinging or vibrating feeling. Outer arms, forearms, shoulders, thighs and calves are generally the most comfortable. Ribs, spine, feet, hands, elbows and knees are spicier. Small first tattoos are usually done quickly, and the adrenaline helps!
Tips: breathe slowly, keep still, chat to us or listen to music, and don’t take aspirin beforehand (it thins the blood).
After your tattoo
The first few weeks are when your tattoo heals, and good aftercare keeps it looking sharp for life. Read our full tattoo aftercare guide for a day-by-day breakdown. The short version: keep it clean, use a thin layer of cream, don’t pick it, keep it out of the sun and out of pools and the sea until it’s healed.
